Grain handling solutions for farms and industry

Mepu Oy, known for its grain handling equipment, is a leader in its field. The company develops solutions for both smaller farms and industry. During 2021 Smartbutlers assisted Mepu in renewing its business and developing into a global operator. We participated in both strategic planning and implementation of the strategy.

“When I bought Mepu in 2016, I had a clear vision that the company would grow into a credible international player. A strong brand story is an important part of that journey, with which we build ever better customer experiences and grow into a global operator. Smartbutlers was the perfect guide for us. They knew how to help plan both the destination and the route. We received a visualized roadmap and guidance on how to secure the travel fund,” says Janne Käkönen, Mepu’s CEO and owner.

At the start of the project, essential changes in the company’s operations were initiated. The changes were described in the company strategy — a roadmap was created and a shared mission, vision and way of working were established as the foundation of the strategy. Renewal was carried out on three fronts and accordingly the project tasks were (a) clarifying the brand story and creating a strong, internationally working customer promise, (b) developing operations for international markets and raising readiness for international activity, and (c) shifting from a supplier to a solutions provider and an international project expert offering turnkey services. This transformation was encapsulated under the “The Best Possible” promise.

“We wanted to stand out from competitors and promise something more. We didn’t want to generally promise the best for everyone, but rather the best possible for someone with a specific customer need. That requires flexibility, agility, continuous innovation as well as an internal customer service mindset and project reliability. Everything the company has to offer,” says Patrik Anckar from Smartbutlers.

Key marketing-related tasks of the assignment included clarifying and building Mepu’s brand internationally, developing distribution channels and the agent network, planning sales tools and marketing, mapping and selecting countries and target groups, commercializing new businesses and preparing the necessary action plans. During 2022 the collaboration between Mepu and Smartbutlers continues, for example with the design of digital tools and the development of a sustainability program.
